Highway Teams Win National Quality Award

Virginia’s Rt. 1 Interchange Scores

New Orleans, LA/November 14, 2006 – The National Partnership for Highway Quality (NPHQ) has awarded one of its National 2006 “Making a Difference” awards to Virginia highway teams whose quality innovations promote roads that are completed more quickly, ride better, last longer, reduce congestion, and improve safety.  Entries are judged by a panel of transportation industry leaders who serve on the NPHQ Steering Committee.

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) won the Silver Award in the Partnering category for the Route 1 Interchange project.  The Route 1 Interchange project involved the complete reconstruction of an existing interchange, which also is an integral part of the overall Woodrow Wilson Bridge replacement project in the Washington, D, C. metropolitan area.  The interchange project contains 11 bridges and represents over three lane miles of the entire seven-and-a-half-mile Woodrow Wilson Bridge project.

The success of the project is attributed to a strong formal partnering relationship.  In addition to VDOT and its Prime Contractor, Potomac Crossing Consultants, there was a multitude of other Federal, State and Local partnerships necessary to address the countless issues involved with the project.  Issues ranged from wetland mitigation to relocation of residents in apartment buildings.

Despite the many challenges, the project was constructed in two years, on time, and a full $1.6 million under budget.

“The spotlight has been on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge project because of its proximity to the Nation’s Capitol,” said NPHQ’s Executive Director Bob Templeton, “and I’m proud of the transportation industry, which fostered partnerships to help solve community and environmental concerns, while bringing a quality project in on time and under budget.”
