I-81 Bridges Over Buffalo Creek Improve Service of Critical Roadway
VDOT Gains in Safety, Mobility and Environmental Protection, With Reduced Maintenance Cost
Two new bridges and over 1.3 miles of approach reconstruction now accommodate three travel lanes with 14 foot wide shoulders for future traffic increases. Construction of the $32 million project began in August 2004 and was completed on time (July 2007) within budget and with outstanding quality.
This innovative jointless bridge deck and abutment design features columns up to 110 feet tall, 600 foot long structures constructed of hybrid weathering structural steel and multi-column concrete piers on spread foundations. The combination of these features reduces the vertical sag of the road, minimizes the impact of the substructure in this environmentally sensitive area and tones down the visual appearance of the piers.
The Bridges over Buffalo Creek project raised the level of service, expanded operating space for vehicles, reduced maintenance costs and improved safety for thousands of motorists who use this picturesque Shenandoah Valley corridor daily. "I-81 is the backbone of Virginia's transportation network," said Rockbridge Delegate Ben Cline. "The Buffalo Creek project will enhance safety and relieve congestion along this section of I-81 by providing a targeted third climbing lane for truck traffic ... and assists in meeting our long-term goal of maintaining Virginia's transportation infrastructure."
Since its completion in the 1960's, Interstate 81 has provided the necessary access to a national highway system that has allowed local officials to attract business and commerce to their counties, cities and towns. This project and future proposed improvements along the corridor will ensure those benefits continue.
