UDOT Upgrades Training Programs Targeting 1,000 Employees

Organizational and Administrative Innovations Honored for Excellence

UDOT developed new training programs married to major organizational and administrative innovations affecting nearly 1,000 employees in 125 separate work units throughout the State.

The Transportation Education Program (TEP) began with the need to train transportation technicians in both construction and maintenance activities, including heavy equipment operation.  TEP was designed in several levels.  It begins with the Transportation Technician Academy, which must be completed in the first year of employment and provides an introduction to many of the job skills needed by UDOT.  TEP II consists of Math and English classes taught by Salt Lake Community College, available through distance learning technologies.  The third TEP module is a web-based program that covers maintenance and construction topics.

To improve job performance and efficiency, UDOT also upgraded its existing Maintenance Management System (MMS) to a more user-friendly Operations Management System (OMS).  This allows information to be shared from several systems within Operations/Maintenance, from other internal UDOT systems, and from statewide procurement, financial, payroll and accounting programs.  A core project team oversees OMS development and training to ensure personnel needs are met.  Boot Camps help OMS Trainers develop knowledge and skill in adult learning fundamentals, in accelerated and active learning styles as well as in technical and computer-based training techniques.

UDOT's approach to delivering training to a diverse and geographically scattered workforce reflects the agency’s commitment to highway and transportation quality.  It also allows UDOT to spend tax dollars on the roadway where the traveling public gains the most benefit.
